Chiang Mai Yi Peng and Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most beautiful traditional festival experiences, combining glowing lanterns, candlelit offerings, Northern Thai culture, and a festive evening atmosphere.
Although the two festivals take place around the same time, they have different traditions.
Yi Peng (ยี่เป็ง): A traditional Northern Thai Lanna festival celebrated by lighting lanterns and decorating homes and temples with lights.
Loy Krathong (ลอยกระทง): A Thai festival in which people float small decorated baskets, usually made from natural materials, on water to symbolically let go of misfortune and make wishes for the future.
In Chiang Mai, visitors may enjoy illuminated temples, traditional performances, local food, and riverside celebrations. Some organized events also offer lantern-release activities, but these are held at designated venues and are not permitted everywhere.
